Meet The Engines
We have a number of steam and diesel engines at Valley Railway. We are always looking for more volunteers to help look after them. Get in touch if you think you can help.
You can adopt an engine here at Valley Railway as well! Its a great gift package and your adoption helps to maintain our wonderful engines for future generations.
Monty
Another Exmoor engine built in 1996 for the Markeaton Park Railway in Derby. The engine has been rebuilt with a new boiler and is a regular engine at The Valley Railway Adventure. Whilst similar in appearance to Spirit of Adventure and Anne, Monty is a lot smaller and not really suitable for use on the heavier trains at Perrygrove. It therefore spends all of its time at The Valley Railway Adventure
St.Egwin
Built in 2003 by Exmoor Steam Railway, St Egwin is one of the few tender engines they have built. It was designed to resemble “The Bug”, a well-known engine based at Romney in Kent. St Egwin is very powerful for its size and has surprised many people on visits to other railways by its capability. The engine can handle trains at both Perrygrove and The Valley, but is more often found at The Valley Railway Adventure.
Dougal
Built in 1970 by Severn Lamb, Dougal is the oldest steam engine in the collection by a long way. The engine has been heavily rebuilt, having started life as a small tank engine, it has now been rebuilt with a bigger boiler and a tender. It’s a very capable engine and a firm favourite with drivers – except in bad weather when it’s very exposed on the footplate! The engine is normally in use at The Valley Railway Adventure.
Cromwell
This diesel hydraulic locomotive was originally built to 2’ gauge but Ruston and Hornsby in 1960. It has worked on a number of railways over the years but has been the main diesel locomotive at The Valley since 2006. It can often be seen on our mid-week services in term time, or around the station on other days. It can work at Perrygrove as well if needed.
Sludge
The oldest of our locomotives, Sludge was built in 1955 by R.A. Lister. These were a very common industrial engine and very successful. It was re-gauged to 15” and has worked at The Valley Railway Adventure since the building of the railway in 2001. Like Workhorse, it is too small for regular passenger use and so can often be seen on maintenance trains and shunting the yard at The Valley Railway Adventure.
